La Bataille de Leipzig: Mayhem in a Plain White Box

Hi Kids,  There's a new game in town, a labor of love from the lads at Marshal Enterprises.  Leipzig 1813, the Battle of Nations!  Where our boy Nappie took on all comers in the wilds of what used to be Prussia.  In the Big tradition of La Bataille monster games everywhere, this one is pretty honkin' big too.  Huge maps, 2000 counters, 180 page rulebook, playing time a couple months....  This one is somewhat of a departure from the standard La Bataille game; there is no printed rule book, just a cd so you can print it yourself; the maps show two areas that do not connect; and a really flimsy white box almost free of decoration and strength.  M.E. has been in the Nappie battle monster game business for at least 20-30 years, with all sorts of stuff out there; Austerlitz, Wagram, Moscova, and a bunch of battles from the Peninsula and the 100 Days.  Most of them are good solid games, just ask the lads on ComSimWorld.  Some are even worth Big Money; a couple years ago a copy of Austerlitz went for US$1100 on ebay.  Wow.  They only printed 400 copies of this newest monster, and last week they had already sold 350, so if you want one you better act fast!  US$200 smackers and it can be yours!  The lads out in the sticks west of here have already broken out a copy and started playing it. There are about 5 of them playing on Monday nights.

The Order of Battle for the scenario the lads are playing.  These are the reinforcements.

 Close up of the French.

 And the Austrians.
This map is about 4 or 5 feet across and 4 feet tall.  The two maps show areas where there was a lot of action in the areas around Leipzig, but do not match up.  Lots of scenarios!  This is turn one.  Unit density is still pretty low, the reinforcements have yet to show up.   Have a beer!
 The Vistula Legion perhaps?

Russians on the left, French on the right.

Did I mention the plain white box?  No one would suspect there was a monster game lurking within!  This thing is about as strong as those crumby boxes in which shirts are packed.  Exercise extreme caution opening this thing.

Boltaction Soviet anti-tank riflemen

The 28mm WWII Soviet project continues. Chuckaroo has picked up some Soviets from the Plastic Soldier Company and Wargames Factory. One thing they lack out of the box that the Boltaction Soviets have are anti-tank rifles. The Disposable heroes Soviet list allows up to three antitank rifle teams so I offered to trade some of my surplus anti tank rifle men for some regular rifleman from Chuckaroo. He agreed so I went ahead and built them.

first a comparison picture of the PTRD12.7mm anti-tank rifle compared to an Imperial Guard Las-gun from Warhammer 40k. You can really see the difference in the regular scale and the 40k heroic scale.

The first rifle man minus his head.

First anti-tank rifleman complete.

A close up of the rifle detail

All three ready for the trade.

I still have four of the prone bodies and I plan to build three anti-tank rifles for my army and use to last one to build a sniper with a scoped Mosin Nagant.

Bolt Action plastic 28mm WWII Soviets

I have finally started working on  the Bolt Action 28mm Soviet models Chuckaroobob picked up fro me a while back.

The box came with forty miniatures but I was able to pick up some more sprues from Warlord Games during a half price sprue sale.

The first assembled rifle man.

The second assembled rifleman.

I am building the armies using the Disposeable Heroes supplement Urraugh! After pointing out early war list and  late war Infantry platoon lists I will need 59 models to be able to field them. After some trading with chuckaroo I have enough models for the Infantry. I still want to pick up a couple of the maxim hmgs and crew to add to the army. As a short term fix I will use a Chinese maxim until I acquire the Soviet ones.

X wing minatures on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has came and went. I invited Chuckaroobob over to the Casa De Killgore to share in the meal and then get in some X wing gaming. We haven't played much lately but it is the perfect after dinner game to aid digestion.

Our model count is limited to the ships from two box sets so 2 X wings and 4 Tie fighters. Chuckaroo brought his Millennium Falcon to add to the fun. The boy took the two x wings with Fluke skywalker and Biggs darklighter teamed with Chuckaroo running Han Solo in the Falcon. I had the four xwings with Mauler Mithrel, Night beast and two obsidian squadron pilots with three having marksmanship. We lined up and went after each other.

Biggs ability to have to shoot him first, was bad while looking down the guns of four tie fighters.

Biggs gets smoked by the tie Fighters.

everybody turns, The two obsidian squadron pilots break left while Mauler, night beast and Fluke Koiogran turn.

everybody closes

Fluke and Solo finish Night beast

Fluke takes a walkabout while Solo stares down the Ties

Hard to beat four hits, Solo smoke Mauler.

Another random move by Fluke draws out the Tie and Solo bags number three.

a last desperate run but Solo Finishes the fourth tie. We had a great time.

Game two. This time Fluke is solo but with an R2D2, proton torpedoes and marksmanship while Chewbacca is at the helm for the Falcon. I took the same four Ties with three having marksman ship.

Chewy isn't as quick as Han Solo but three evades still beat three hits, no matter how quick you are.

First blood sort of goes to Fluke. A stunned pilot in a Tie hits him and is destroyed.

Fluke gets vaped after running around repairing his shields. Luckily Chewy had kept the Tie fighters interested by letting them shoot holes in the Falcon.

Down to Two Tie fighter verses the Falcon, until too close for comfort the third tie goes down.

Chuckaroo Says " LOOK INTO MY EYE!"

Switchblades in a phone booth, The Falcon down to a single hull point remaining facing a Tie with one hull point remaining. Chewy goes first and smokes the Tie. Game Over.

The second game was much closer. After the game Chuckaroo checked and the two critical hits that Chewbacca converted to regular hits would have destroyed the Falcon. Maybe next time.

40k League Finals

Thw Warhammer 40k League has finally finished. We started with 12 players and had half the field drop by the end. The upside is even though I was last in the league I made it into the top six tournament by default. The way the tournament worked was that the 3,4,5,6th ranked players split and played each other. The winners of those two games played number one and two, followed by those winners playing for the championship. I drew Mike W and his Eldar for my game. I played him twice earlier in the league but only have the one battle report from our second game.

The terrain was set out for the game by the League organizer. The scenario was a combination Relic and Eternal War. We set up on the short table edges and this is when I lost the game.

Mike W's  TauDar. Two big warp spider squads, support weapon squad, firewarrior squad, Ethereal, a couple farseers, Autarch on jetbike in a jetbike squad, Riptide suit, two broadsides with missile pods, a dark reaper squad in a wave serpent and a dire avenger squad in a wave serpent, with everything that could get a skyfire or interceptor upgraded.

I wasn't going to play in the tournament but the sixth player dropped and I was in. I  contemplated a big Imperial Guard allied detachment but wasn't able to finish building the models I wanted to use so I went with a "More Than They Can shoot down" Plague Zombie Horde List. I took Huron Blackheart as my warlord, Typhus, 82 plague zombies in three squads, a noise marine squad in a rhino, two nurgle obliterators, five chaos terminators with a Land raider dedicated transport and two Heldrakes. Their was no way I was going to get the Relic slow walking a mob of plague zombies into the teeth of the TauDar gun line. I rolled for Huron's master of deception warlord trait and only made one unit infiltrate. So I chose to outflank the Terminators and their land raider.

After the Taudar shooting turn one, 27 plague zombies killed and a rhino destroyed.

Then the Warp spiders jump up a little closer.

My turn two a Heldrake and the obliterators arrive. The Heldrake is immediatley skyfired and intercepted down.

The obliterators destroy a wave serpent and pin the dark reapers inside.

The Warpspiders from the other end of the table show up in the backfield on his turn three.

The Obliterators had a good run but are gunned down.

My turn three the landraider and other Heldrake arrive. That Heldrake took the Skyfire on the nose but survived. The Terminators on the other hand deployed and shot down some dark reapers. The Landraider also scored by killing the two broadside battle suits.

Taudar turn four the army redeploys to take on the terminators.

The terminators survive one squad of warpspiders,

But not the second squad and dark reapers.

The riptide charges in and wiffs the attack.

The relic left in the open after the Heldrake burned down the jetbike squad. Only one choice to make.

TANK SHOCK! the land raider can't carry the relic but it can park on it.

The Riptide and warpspiders move up.

But the land raider is destroyed by a thrown Singing spear. We roll and the game ends at turn five.
It was almost a lost cause from the start but I had fun playing. I can see how the TauDar lists are all the rage in tournaments. As a side note after the game was finished and we were talking about it while we waited for the next round to start. It was pointed out that a Singing Spear only has armorbane in melee, so it wouldn't have been able to destroy a land raider if thrown. The down side of neither you nor your opponent knowing their wargear rules.

So my final standing for a possible 17 games was 4 wins, 2 draws and 11 loses. All four wins were from my opponents forfeiting games. I joined the league to play games so I succeeded in that. I played some really good games and I am starting to get a better feel for the Chaos Space Marine codex. The two Taudar lists in the final six ended up splitting the top prize rather than fight the last game against each other.

They are talking about another league starting next January. I might play but probably with a different army.
