Dark Elf Kin War

Here is the Warhammer Fantasy Battle game I played on 13Nov10 at the GameOnGw Games day at the Cage in High Point NC. I played Zeke whom I had meet for the first time that day. The Majority of the players were playing 40k and Zeke had only brought his Dark Elves. So I broke out the army and we rolled a scenario. I forget the scenario name but it is the one where your units may be in reserve. Zeke rolled and had his Black Guard, a dark rider unit and his shades in reserve. I rolled and had My Lvl 4 sorceress, the thirty man unit of spear men and a ten man unit of corsairs held in reserve.
Here is a picture of the starting lines. We were playing 2500 points
My List was
A Level 4 sorceress with a Sacrificial dagger using the Lore of Fire
A Level 2 sorcerer with a dispel scroll using the lore of Metal
A Master with Lifetaker as General
An Assassin with Mark of Khaine and Manbane

A unit of 20 Corsairs with Serpent Standard were the Assassin hides.
A Unit of 10 Corsairs
A unit of 10 Repeating Crossbowmen
2 Units of 6 Harpies
A unit of 5 Darkriders with Rxbs and including a musician

A unit of 7 Shades

Two Repeating Bolt throwers
Two Hydras

Zeke's list was something like this

A Sorceress lvl 4
Death Hag with Cauldron of Blood

two blocks of 25 spear men
a unit of 20 repeating crossbowmen
two units of 5 dark riders

A unit of Shades
A unit of 20 Black Guard
A unit of Cold One Knights

One Hydra

Some early game Highlights was me deploying my shades behind his Rxbowmen only to have his shade come onto the table and shoot my shades down. Then his Cold One knights failed their stupidity test and fail a charge at my troops.

The next turn I charged the Knights with one hydra and landed both units of Harpies behind them. I did some damage but we forgot the Hydra's thunder stomp attack.

My Sorceress, the spear men and the small unit of corsairs arrive on the board.

He had already shot down all but one of my Dark riders on his last turn and then he charged my Repeating Bolt thrower. Who were slaughtered and the rider over ran into the flank of the Repeating cross bowmen.

The aftermath of the hydra verses hydra fight. He had cast a spell on my hydra to reduce its initiative so his Hydra went first and he remembered to thunder stomp, which killed the hydra before it could swing.

The Dark riders win the combat and the Master, Sorcerer, and Repeating Crossbowmen flee and out run the Dark Riders, who hit the other Repeating Bolt thrower. My Sorcerer had started the game with the Repeating Both thrower but was almost killed by a spell targeted it. So He jumped to the crossbow unit for a little more survivability. The rest of the story was that Zeke's Sorceress cast another spell and miscast. The result lowered her Spell level three level and really took her out of the game.

My turn the Corsairs with the Sea Serpent Standard charge into the Cold One knights and reveal the Assassin, while a unit of harpies charge the rear of the Knights. The second unit of Harpies lands between the knights and the block of spear men to stop them from getting a flank charge on the Corsairs. When it was said and done the Knights went down.

This is the last shot of the game. Zeke had to leave so we called it a game after three turns. It looked bad but I was still in the running.
I had fun but I think that I need to get the rulebook and put it to the scientific precision. Learning the rules as i go is not the way to do it. I believe I will add the cauldron of Blood back into my list and maybe a larger unit of Repeating Crossbows or two and another unit of Spear men.

Dark Elf Warrior Repair

Last weekend I picked up another batch of second chance dark elf warriors. Some had seen some better days and needed a little work to get them back into shape. Among the damaged models were two missing a foot. I knew they were damaged when I got them but for the price I also knew I could fix them.

Above is the first one. I drilled out where the leg was and then bent up an armature to base the foot on. I added a roll of green stuff to the armature and then glued the other foot to the base. I formed the green stuff into a basic shape and let it cure for several hours.

I went back to the model and added a small roll of green stuff and formed it around the basic shape. I then smoothed everything out and to shape. Finally I added an indention around the base to form the sole of the boot.
It was kind of fast and loose but I doubt anyone will be able to tell the difference once I get it based and painted.

In The Beginning

I haven't been posting much lately but I have been getting a bit of hobby work done. I have been priming and base painting the majority of the army. As I worked i thought about how long I have been collecting dark Elves and the first models I ever bought for the army. Below is the first squad of Dark Elves I ever bought way back in 89'/90'.

These are the Dark elves that came in the fabled fantasy regiment box. The box came with 10 orcs, 10 goblins, 10 skaven, 10 dwarves, 10 wood elves and 10 dark elves all for twenty dollars. I still kick my self for not buying ten boxes but that ranks up with the three rhino tank box and the two land raider tank boxes for around twenty dollars. I still have all the models from that box except the dwarves which I traded off for something I don't remember.
The original reason for getting the Dark Elves was as followers for my Slaanesh Champion in the Slaves to Darkness campaign I was playing in at the time. They spread much pain in the service of the Dark Prince but that is another story. Later they made many appearances in various role playing games and as allies to a few other warhammer fantasy armies when you could still have allies from other armies.
I entertained the thought of stripping their paint but instead I have given them a chaos black wash and plan to touch them up and add a few details. I am also debating about leaving them with their pink helmets or not. I am still working on the paint scheme for my Dark Elves but will leave these in their old scheme no matter what. I have a dark elf sorcerer I plan to use as a level two wizard so the army is already harboring a male wizard against the Witch King's strictures against male magic users, so a band of open Slaanesh worships will really mark the army as a band of ruthless outcasts or powerful enough the ignore anything that they choose to.
I will think on it some more.

My Little World 3rd Anniversary

Once again 26 September has come and My Little World of Dementia celebrates its third anniversary.

I invited some friends over for a test game of eighth edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle. I fielded three thousand points of Dark elves against an equal amount of Empire played by my buddies Jerry and Tony. It was a learning game and I learned I should have read the rules more. We spent a lot of time just looking up basic stuff I should have gained a better understanding of before I tried playing a game.

First some Highlights,

My first roll for Power dice in my first game of eighth edition Warhammer, Snake Eyes! I tried a spell and it was dispelled with a dice roll, end magic phase. I had a sacrificial dagger on my High Sorceress and failed to use it once during the game. I have since went back to my army list and written "Remember to use Dagger for Every Spell" beside the High Sorceress entry.

A combat from the right flank. A hydra and a unit of Executioners lead by a Sorcerer charge some knights. The knights had already been hit by the metal lore spell that subtracts one point of armor. I figured I would try again and Jerry played the Hex Scroll which turned the Sorcerer into a frog. Luckily the hydra breathed on the knights killing three and dropped the last two with its normal attacks. The Sorcerer was still a frog but at least a knight didn't stomp him.

We were playing the Watchtower scenario and Tony was defending it with a twenty man unit of Huntsmen. My unit of twenty Corsairs with the Sea Serpent standard and an assassin charged the tower on turn one. I ended up losing several going in but because of the +1 attack buff from the Cauldron of blood, frenzy from the banner and the assassin they threw over forty attacks. The Assassin issued a challenge and the marksman accepted it which gave me a good over kill bonus. The Huntsmen killed a few Corsairs and the Corsairs killed over half of the Huntsmen. The Huntsman broke and ran and the Corsairs caught them. This pursuit left them beyond the tower and right in front of the Fifty man Spearman unit lead by the Empire general. Bad day.

The left flank, a unit of dark riders and Harpies rounding the bend. My plan was to charge some mortars that are stage right of the Wizard but we called the game before they go their chance.

The spearmen didn't charge in their turn so in my turn the Corsairs did. The Assassin issued a challenge and Jerry accepted with his General, who received a killing blow and failed his ward save. The Corsairs had the Cauldron +1 attack buff , were still frenzied and had the fire lore spell cast on them to give a +1 to wound rolls. They killed eleven spearmen and then the Spearmen killed the rest of the Corsairs. We figured combat resolution and I was about to roll the break test when I remembered Eternal Hatred and did the re rolls for the Corsairs. They ended up killing a couple more spearmen which put me winning the combat by one. The Spearmen made their break test even without the general and I pondered if it would have been better for the Assassin to have run back to the tower.
We ended up calling the game soon after the Spearman combat. It wasn't a full game but we learned a lot about what we still need to know about the new edition. Some of the changes like true line of sight and premeasuring will take getting use to but I like it. I also like the variable in the Magic phase. It makes every magic phase count.
A couple other highlights that I didn't get pictures of were the first turn shooting from a six man unit of shades that killed a cannon and the second Hydra using it breath weapon to kill fifteen models out of a twenty five model Halbardier unit to the right of the big spearman unit.

Catawba Gamers at PBKW

I went with Chuckaroobob and John Bays to Parker, Banner, Kent and Wayne in Cornelius for a Catawba Gamers gaming day. PBKW is a nice comic/gaming store that I have heard about but this was the first time I had ever been there. The main event was a the Sword and the Flame game GMed by Chuckaroo. It was a French vs. the Arabs game with nine players, 4 European and 5 native. After a exciting game it was called as a European win. A couple of the major points were a French Foreign Legion square sending off at least 3 units of Arabs and damaging a couple others and a unit of Dutch colonial troops firing up a native unit and destroying a European lancer unit at the same time. I think one of the contributing factors to a European win was that the Native couldn't buy a dice roll. I couldn't count the failed closing to combat rolls they made. I would like to thank ChuckarooBob for a great game.
After the TSATF game we broke up for some 1000 point Flames of War games. I took my Soviets and fielded a strekovy batalon. I team up with a couple guys splinting a Cossack soviet force. We squared off against some German players in a simple one objective "King of the Hill" scenario. First of all I need to say I should probably read the rulebook before I try to play another game of Fow. I haven't played a pure infantry army ever. They play much differently from my mostly armored force I normally field. There is a big difference in 1500 point armies and 1000 point armies and how you play them. I had fun playing but found I had a different opinion on how several rules can be interpreted.
I ,of course, forgot my camera. I had placed it on the table so I would not forget it and did, so sorry no pictures this time.
I did pick up some Africa korp 15mm Germans that I plan to convert into Handscar SS troops by turning their soft hats into Fezzes. I also traded John B some chaos stuff for some Dark Elves. Now I just have to get those dark elves onto the table.

Jan 27th Games Day at the Castle

I am getting ready for it. I have yet to decide on which GW armies to take. It looks like thet are planning 1850 for 40k and 2250 for fantasy. I am going to take my Soviet Flames of war army to possibly face off against Chuckaroobob.

I am leaning towards my Iron Warrior Chaos marine army for 40k mostly because it is a better painted army and packed up and ready to trave,l but I have to decide on which fantasy army to take.

I am hoping to play in Scott Tolberts planned Fantasy league but I am thinking about using it as motivation to finish painting up another army. I have mostly played my Beasts of Chaos and Vampire Counts in the last couple Leagues but I am leaning towards Dark Elves. I have collected up a pile of figures and haven't fielded any of them yet. I am going to make up some lists and then make a decision.
